A small plane crashed into the yard of a home just west of Santa Monica Airport at around 2:45 p.m. Monday near 21st Street and Navy.
The pilot has been seriously injured, suffering a broken leg. No one was home at the time, though painters working in the backyard rescued the pilot from the wreckage as fuel spilled over him.
FAA spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the Cessna 172 crashed a block from the end of the airport runway shortly after taking off from the airport. It struck the wall of a house a block from the end of the runway.
Aerial footage showed the wreckage of the plane but there was no fire. The cause of the crash was not immediately known.
