Work Attire for Women

The LA City Commission on the Status of Women is collecting work attire to distribute to women who live in the Mar Vista Gardens area or receive services at the Mar Vista Family Center.

Timed in honor of Mother's Day on May 10, the drive follows a successful effort in March to collect clothing for women in Baldwin Village, which has grappled with gang and drug activity and high unemployment.

Santa Monica Pier Gets New Ferris Wheel!

Santa Monica plans to to debut its new ferris wheel next Wed., May 28 -- with 160,000 new lights added to the $1.5-million carnival ride. The celebration will feature a lighting ceremony at 8:45 p.m., then free rides and snacks until midnight. Maria Shriver will be on hand to raise $65,000 for the Special Olympics by selling the old ferris wheel on EBay.

Santa Monica Tree Removals Prompt Overnight Protest

After last week's deforestation of ficus trees along 2nd and 4th Streets in Santa Monica, Treesavers are holding an overnight protest in front of Santa Monica City Hall beginning Tuesday evening while the City Council is in session.

According to local blog Curbed LA, Councilman Bill Rosendahl's office wrote the following email to West Side Neighborhood Council (NC) Presidents, urging the Mar Vista Neighborhood Council to spend $25,598 or lose it:

Venice Boardwalk to Setup Free Speech Zones

The LA Times reports that the LA City Council has unanimously approved a new ordinance to regulate Venice Beach, curtail 'unwanted' commercial activity and bring order to an unruly subculture of freewheeling public expression with new rules setting noise limits on street performers.

In addition, the the boardwalk's west side will be divided into two free speech zones -- a "p-zone" and an "i-zone."

Controversial Jets Banned from Santa Monica Airport

The Santa Monica City Council has banned large, fast “Category C and D” jet aircraft from Santa Monica Airport, gearing up for an expected court battle with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Santa Monica wants longer “runway safety areas” (RSAs) to protect the safety of nearby residential neighborhoods by preventing aircraft from overrunning the end of the runway.

Mar Vista Tsunami Drill Feb 20th 7 am to 12 noon

Senior Inspector Chris Hatzikian announces that the Housing Department will be conducting a drill to test their response to a simulated Tsunami disaster. The drill will be conducted between 7:00 am and 12:00 noon on Saturday February 20th.

A force of 70-100 Housing Department inspectors clad in blue jump suits will be staging at Mar Vista Recreation Center and deployed to low-lying areas in Venice.
