Mar Vista Leading in Climate Action

On November 10th 2009 the Mar Vista Community Council unanimously approved a motion to make Mar Vista the first clean electricity neighborhood in Los Angeles, with a goal of 100% clean electricity by 2018.
With Million Solar Roofs funding, solar electricity is now cheaper than coal-powered electricity for many homeowners with solar-friendly rooftops.  With community support, Mar Vista can be a leader in installing solar panels on our schools, library and post office.

We just had our design finished and will be installing shortly. Are there others out there who have gone the solar lease way with Solar City? Any problems? Rave reviews? Things to know?

Hello Neighbors! My name is Matthew Genender and I, too, live in Mar Vista. I work with Bonterra Solar, and we offer, both, Solar Electric and Solar Hot Water systems for residential (single family and multi-family) dwellings, as well as commercial properties. For anyone interested in solar, I would love the opportunity to meet with you and have a conversation. I believe there is no better decision than an informed decision, so I am happy to answer all the questions you may have, in order to help guide you through the process. Whether you choose Bonterra Solar, or any of the other great companies out there offering solar, I commend all of you for taking the initiative! My cell is (310) 944-5575, and my email is, and I am always available to you. Thank you, and again, I applaud your efforts!

Hey all,

Our panels were turned on last week and we can't stop ourselves from going out and watching the meter run backwards!

To Katie's questions below: We are leasing the panels through Solar City. The entire experience was great. Solar City couldn't have made the process any easier for us nor could they have been any nicer. They were very communicative throughout the entire process the only hold-up/glitch we had was getting the final approval from the DWP.

Thanks to James and John(?) for all the work they did in arranging the Mar Vista/Solar City arrangement.

Hi Fred, congrats on your solar electricity!

Our panels are installed though we are still working through some inspections/approvals on our electrical hookup with DWP before they're turned on. This is unique to our situation -- we've heard from a number of participants that their panels are now generating clean electricity from the Sun. Very exciting!

We've been really happy and impressed with all the various SolarCity people who have been involved along the way.
