Event Description

The Venice Arts Gallery is pleased to present Narrative Space, its inaugural exhibition in the “Fresh Perspectives Visiting Curator” program. Narrative Space is the project of OIMOA (the Optical Image Makers of America), a newly formed curatorial collective by Los Angeles-based artists Meg Madison, Kireilyn Barber, and Gregory Walker. The gallery will host a reception for the exhibition on Saturday, November 16, 5–8pm.

Through photographs, videos, and performances, Narrative Space explores the space of possibilities from which all stories come within the narrowing yet unlimited syntax of the photographic apparatus. “We will be investigating this space of the photograph at its point of contact with the surrounding world. Every photographic narrative is an interpretation of the visual experience in some way. Or, rather, every photographic interpretation is a unique re-telling of a story...dependent on the surrounding information, the artist behind the apparatus, and the medium employed to construct the images.”

The work in Narrative Space moves from landscape to cityscape, interior to exterior, dark to light, and then beyond the frame into the immediacy of performance. In separate performances, Nancy Popp and Ali Tobia will investigate both aperture and the oral cavity as narrative apparatuses. The performances will begin at 6:00 pm on the night of the reception.

Narrative Space, the “Fresh Perspectives Visiting Curator Exhibition,” will be on display through December 13, 2013. A special video screening night will take place on Thursday, December 5 at 7:30pm, with works contemplating urban, architectural, and metaphysical space. The Venice Arts Gallery is open Monday–Friday, 10am–6pm and by appointment.
